Big name sports stars have been some of the biggest drivers of the ongoing Twitter explosion. Now, sports fans can follow their favorite celebrity sports Twitterers all in one place.
SportsFanLive.com, a sports community site founded last August by CBS and Yahoo veteran David Katz, has launched a new channel—AthleteTweets.com, which automatically collects Twitter commentary from the likes of Olympian Michael Phelps to the National Basketball Association’s Shaquille O'Neal, who already boasts of over 700,000 Twitter followers.
But the appeal of the new site, according to SportsFanLive.com executives, is that it doesn’t require fans to be Twitter members themselves, making it far more accessible to mainstream Web users. “The majority of sports fans are not on Twitter and do not really understand how it works, but they would certainly be interested in what these athletes are doing and saying,” wrote Katz in an email.
Other athlete Twitterers include tennis star Serena Williams and cycling legend Lance Armstrong. Users can elect to view a constantly updating stream of all athletes’ tweets on the channel’s main page, or the can visit pages dedicated to individual athletes which showcase their recent Twitter activity.
Besides athletes, AthleteTweets.com also features Twitter-fed musings from prominent coaches and executives, including Dallas Mavericks’ owner Mark Cuban.
AthleteTweets.com is not yet specifically ad supported. But plans are in the works to develop several custom sponsorship programs that incorporate the site’s unique tweet-aggregation experience, said Katz.
