On Tuesday afternoon, Lucky hosted an event called “fabb” (with two b’s!), a fashion and beauty blog conference, as part of Social Media Week. Though the shopping mag’s editor-in-chief Brandon Holley (formerly of the post-Jane Pratt Jane) wasn’t within Adweek’s eyesight in the spanking new Apella building’s crowded room, one cheeky blonde certainly was: keynote speaker Joan Rivers.
It was 12:20 p.m., and Rivers approached the podium with a glass of white wine in hand.
“Listen to me, everybody,” she told the crowd, which included Erica Domesek of PS I Made This, Delmy Rivera of Fashion Bananas and Jessica Quirk of What I Wore. “There’s just one thing I have to say before we get started. Watch Joan & Melissa on WE at 9 o’clock tonight. That’s all I give a shit about.”
Joan relinquished her beverage, saying she didn’t want word that she was drinking so early getting out all over the Internet. (Though, after this, maybe it will.)
“Though the reason I’m drinking so early,” she clarified, “is because some bitch is saying it’s her body on GoDaddy [for the Super Bowl commercial].” She went on, “It is her body, but still.”
Rivers fielded some questions (about how female writers can find their voices and what it was like as a comedienne tackling hot-button issues in the '60s), and along the way found time to rip into Victoria Beckham (“bitch”), Nicole Kidman (“stupid”) and the Kardashians (“slutty”).
Dressed head to almost-toe (her shoes were Chanel) in Joan Rivers QVC products, she went on to plug her new show three or four times before leaving the audience with a few gems.
Said Rivers: “My biggest regret is not sleeping with Burt Lancaster, and the best advice I ever got was from a mafia guy in Vegas—he said, ‘Some people don’t deserve to live.’”
Other speakers at the day-long event included designers Tory Burch, Rebecca Minkoff, and Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava.
