The Sin City Startup Scene: Get to Know Las Vegas' Emerging Tech Icons

Zappos' success has spawned a Silicon Valley outpost in the desert

You've heard plenty about the burgeoning tech scene developing in Tinseltown, but what about Sin City? Take a road trip a few hours east of Los Angeles and you'll find a plucky Las Vegas startup community brimming with digital companies. With thousands of techies flocking to the Consumer Electronics Show every year (and this week), it makes a lot of sense.

It all started 15 years ago when Zappos was launched here with great fanfare by CEO Tony Hsieh. He has since helped foster local tech with hundreds of millions of investment dollars, and sage advice. Now, the landscape is dotted with agencies, mobile apps, gadget makers and b-to-b marketers.

"We are a diverse group," said Sara Hill, co-founder of The Mill, a Las Vegas accelerator program. "We might not have the resources they have in Silicon Valley, but we're friendly and collaborative, which has helped the community grow."

Check out our Las Vegas map that represents the kind of diversity Hill referenced.
