What’s the first information you consume in the morning?
I unfortunately am a coffee addict, so my first conversation is with my espresso maker. And then I’ll check my phone to make sure all is well. Then I listen to NPR on the way to work.
Do you pick up any local magazines or newspapers when you’re at home in Austin?
When I’m at the newsstand, I’m like a kid in a candy store. The brighter the wrapper, the more it attracts me. So I’ll pick up Texas Monthly or D or whatever it is that makes me think, “Ooh, shiny cover story!” I would love to say that it’s more intelligent than that, but it’s not. My parents are huge news junkies—they read all the papers cover to cover every morning and pass along all the good stories. It’s nice, at 43, to have your parents still informing your life.
What are your thoughts on social media?
I’m not into it. I do pretend to tweet my friends on occasion—I mean, I text people hashtags! But I don’t trust myself to be on Twitter. I say whatever comes to my mind, so who knows what I’d put on there.
How do you listen to music?
I’m so in love with Pandora that it’s almost an unhealthy obsession. I make my friends and family use it and constantly send people what I’m listening to.
What are your go-to Pandora channels?
I think I’ve made every possible mix. On a whim, I put in The Cranberries a little while ago, just thinking, “I’d like to listen to some ‘90s girl music.” But that’s not what came up! It was all women, but from different eras, from the ‘70s all the way to now. Also, Eric Clapton plays a really amazing blues guitar, so if you put him in Pandora and pick the right song, you get an insane amount of blues guitar, which is great.
Are you a TV junkie?
I guess I have to say yes. I have a little kid, so I watch a lot of cartoons—when I look at my iTunes account, all the suggestions are Batman, Spider-Man, Transformers, and I think, “That’s too bad, I used to be an art movie girl!” But I watch a lot of series as a fan. Orphan Black and Longmire were my last two. I love shows about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, which is also basically the stuff I like to work on.
What’s on your reading list?
I just finished The Age of Miracles, which I really enjoyed, and now I’ve cracked open The Lifeboat. And there’s another one—The Year of the Gadfly. I’m reading that one at work. I prefer print books. I have an iPad and a Kindle, but it’s not quite as satisfying on a screen.
Do you have a favorite app.
Well, I’m not going to call Candy Crush my favorite. It’s my nemesis—my waste-of-time app. I’ve taken it off of my phone several times now, and it keeps coming back. But I do have a great time with it.
