Oracle Buys Micros Systems for $5.3 Billion

Latest in a long string of acquisitions

Oracle is purchasing Micros Systems for $5.3 billion as part of a bigger push into retail and hospitality marketing. Oracle’s acquisition comes out to $68 a share, making it one of the company’s biggest buys of the past couple of years.

Micros Systems’ technology powers the point-of-sale systems for hospitality and retail brands. PizzaExpress India, Salsarita’s Fresh Cantina and Louvre Hotels Group have all inked deals to use the company’s services this year, which powers the software and hardware point-of-sale systems.

With the purchase, Oracle’s offerings will get a boost in mobile, social and big data. The acquisition is expected to close before the end of the year.

The Redwood, CA-based company has been on a bit of a spending spree over the past couple of years, most recently buying notable data company BlueKai in February. Other key acquisitions include Responsys in December 2013 and social company Eloqua in 2012.

"Oracle has successfully helped customers across multiple industries, harness the power of cloud, mobile, social, big data and the internet of things to transform their businesses," Mark Hurd, president of Oracle said in a statement.
