New Site Offers 12,000 Film Clips

Movieclips.com, which launched Wednesday, has signed licensing agreements with six of the major studios so that it can offer more than 12,000 two-minute clips culled from a diverse collection of movies.

The free, ad-supported site has deals in place with Fox, MGM, Paramount, Sony, Universal and Warner Bros.

The clips, which can be searched by such criteria as title, genre, actor and dialogue, link to third-party sites where consumers can rent or purchase feature-length versions of each title.

The Movieclips player can be embedded in social networks such as Facebook and MySpace and shared on blogs, Twitter and personal Web sites, allowing viewers to exchange the clips.

"Movieclips.com was created by movie fans for movie fans," co-founder and CEO Zach James said. "Our goal was to build a place where we could easily find, watch and share all the best movie scenes. It's pretty cool to be able to send a clip from Sixteen Candles to my sister on her birthday or a Wayne's World Party on! clip to my friends on a Friday night."

Based in Santa Monica and privately held, Movieclips.com was founded by James, a former investment banker; and Rich Raddon, former director of the Los Angeles Film Festival director. Its advisory board includes author Clayton M. Christensen; producer Sid Ganis; Helfant Enterprises CEO Michael Helfant; Omniture CEO and co-founder Josh James; and Ryan Wright, senior vp of Sony BMG Music.
