Netflix just got an even stronger foothold in the streaming market. The company signed a multiyear contract with film powerhouse Miramax to stream hundreds of cinematic favorites, like Pulp Fiction and Good Will Hunting.
The deal is a coup for Netflix, representing Miramax’s first-ever streaming agreement. Though the terms of the arrangement have not yet been disclosed, Miramax appears to be committed to the project as part of its growing digital strategy. In addition to a tranche of films to be released on Netflix next month, Miramax plans to add more content on a rotating basis.
The Miramax content will join an ever-growing Netflix library. Last month, Netflix added hit shows Glee and Mad Men to its repertoire, while also buying the exclusive rights to House of Cards, a new series that will air only on Netflix next year. The Miramax deal comes in the face of Dish’s attempt to gain stronger positioning in the Netflix-dominated market, signing a deal with HBO last month. However, with Miramax's titles like The English Patient and and Shakespeare in Love, it looks like Netflix just widened the gap between the competition even further.
