The Huffington Post has named veteran digital sales executive Greg Coleman as the company’s new president and chief revenue officer.
Coleman has held several prominent roles in advertising publishing over the past decade or so, both online and offline. Recently, Coleman led global ad sales at Yahoo during several of its most lucrative years, and prior to that, was senior vp of Reader’s Digest Association and president of U.S. magazine publishing.
Most recently of course, Coleman endured a bizzare three-month tenure at AOL. During that brief run, Coleman was named president of AOL’s now defunct Platform-A division by former top executives Randy Falco and Ron Grant in early February, before incoming CEO Tim Armstrong replaced him in April.
Coleman, who is replacing the outgoing chief revenue officer James Smith, is being tasked with putting The Huffington Post's ad sales efforts in line with the site’s robust audience growth. The site, co-founded by prominent author and pundit Arianna Huffington, enjoyed sizable traffic spikes during last year’s presidential election, which it has mostly maintained. The left-leaning property, which aggregates and produces original political news—and often features celebrity bloggers—reached 7.8 million unique users in July, according to Nielsen.
But up until now, advertising on the site has been viewed by many as still nascent. That’s where Coleman comes in. “Greg is uniquely qualified to rapidly build upon the platform we’ve created and to work with our team to grow our revenue and deepen our engagement with marketers,” said Eric Hippeau, who recently replaced Betsy Morgan as The Huffington Post’s chief executive officer. “As a Yahoo board member, I’ve known Greg for many years, and I know firsthand his tremendous experience in online advertising and the extent of his impressive track record.”
