Gawker Calls Ashton Kutcher a 'Massive Whore'

Points to conflicts of interest in guest-edited 'Details'

Gawker’s Ryan Tate has a big problem with Ashton Kutcher and his guest-edited issue of Details. In a scathing piece posted yesterday, Tate calls out the actor for plugging a number of tech companies in which he’s invested—and failing to disclose those investments—in a special online “social issue” of the magazine.

One of the articles, “The Titans of Tech,” profiles four tech companies—three of which reportedly have received investments from Kutcher. But nowhere in the paragraphs detailing Airbnb, Foursquare, and Flipboard is there any disclosure mentioning Kutcher’s financial ties. Elsewhere in the magazine, there’s a plug for social shopping site Fashism, yet another one of Kutcher’s investments—and again, writes Tate, no disclosure of that fact.

But Kutcher’s “most egregious whoring" comes in “Generation Next . . . a guide to the emerging tools transforming the way you live.” Of the 12 products recommended in the article, eight of them, you guessed it, are Kutcher investments, and he’s had business dealings with at least two others.

In a New York Times story about Kutcher’s tech investments that briefly mentions the Details conflict, Details editor Daniel Peres said, “I can assure you that Ashton is not looking at our 500,000 readers as an opportunity to feather his nest.”

Writes Tate: “It's shameless even by Condé Nast standards."
