Former Beach Boy Brian Wilson is debuting his new album, "That Lucky Old Sun," exclusively on Gannett's Web sites. Through Sept. 1 more than 50 of Gannett's newspaper and TV properties will feature streaming audio of Wilson's latest offering. Capitol Records/EMI will release "That Lucky Old Sun" on Sept. 2.
The 32 newspaper Web sites, 19 TV Web sites, and USAToday.com were chosen because of the size of the market and the concentration of Brian Wilson fans. Visitors to these sites will not be able to download the album; instead Gannett is sending people directly to Amazon.com for pre-orders.
"Streaming a full album is a first for Gannett, so we are thrilled to be working with Capitol Records and a musician of Brian Wilson's stature to deliver music in a new way to our online audiences," Jim Lenahan, strategic development manager at Gannett's newspaper division, said in a statement. "This positions us well to expand our digital platforms while demonstrating the power of Gannett to deliver quality content across a network of Web sites."
Said Wilson, with his usual enthusiasm: "This music is really special to me and I hope that everyone will enjoy it!"
According to the Gannett release, That Lucky Old Sun "is a musical love letter from Southern California" that "shimmers with sun-dappled choruses and arrangements that swell and swirl as if carried by the Pacific tides."
