'Wired' Unveils Tech-Focused Health Conference

New health vertical planned for Wired.com

As the traditional print business slows, magazines are looking to other platforms to boost revenue. One example is live conferences, where Wired magazine has already seen success via its annual Wired Business Conference. Now, the magazine is partnering with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to launch Wired Health Conference.

The conference, taking place Oct. 15-16 in New York, grows out of Wired’s 2007 editorial package “Living By Numbers” that explored the impact data and technology are having on the health industry. Speakers include 4-Hour Workweek author Timothy Ferriss, scientist Dr. Craig Venter and Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton. Like the Wired Business Conference, the Health Conference is expected to be a yearly event.

Wired also plans to launch a health vertical on Wired.com in conjunction with the conference. Some existing Wired content, like health-related sports writing from the Playbook blog, will populate the new vertical, but the magazine will likely hire new writers to contribute additional health-related articles. As part of an ongoing overhaul, Wired.com has already launched new verticals (like Wired Design) and revamped others (GeekDad, Threat Level).
