Vogue Wins Top Prize at National Magazine Awards

New York mag, The New Yorker tie for most awards

Vogue won Magazine of the Year at the National Magazine Awards.

Earlier this evening, magazine editors from across the country gathered at the 2015 National Magazine Awards to honor the year's best magazine content, including writing, design, photography and digital platforms. The ceremony, which took place in New York, was hosted by ABC's World News Tonight anchor David Muir.

The top prize for Magazine of the Year, which encompasses both editorial excellence and "branded content and services, including conferences and events," went to Condé Nast fashion bible Vogue. Accepting the award was the magazine's legendary editor in chief Anna Wintour.

Condé also happened to be the most-awarded publisher of the night with a total of seven wins. (By comparison, Hearst, Time Inc. and Rodale had just one each.)

The winners of this year's category-specific General Excellence awards were The New Yorker (for General Interest), Glamour (Service and Lifestyle), Garden & Gun (Style and Design), Men's Health (Active Interest) and The Hollywood Reporter (Special Interest). The Hollywood Reporter, which scored its first win as well as first nomination this year, is owned by Adweek's parent company.

New York magazine (which entered the race with the most nominations) and The New Yorker tied for the most awards for a single magazine, winning three Ellies apiece. New York took home trophies for Design, Magazine Section and Columns and Commentary, while The New Yorker won General Excellence, Essays and Criticism and Fiction. Following with two awards each were National Geographic (for Photography and Tablet Magazine) and first-time winner Nautilus (General Excellence and Website).

Other first-time National Magazine Award winners included The Atavist (Feature Writing), Pacific Standard (Public Interest), The Texas Observer (Multimedia) and Vice News (Video).

This year's special award for Creative Excellence was presented to Time photojournalist James Nachtwey.

While the ceremony is typically held in May, it was moved up this year to fall closer to the publication dates of the magazines being honored and to coincide with the American Magazine Media Conference, which is currently taking place. The National Magazine Awards are sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors and Columbia Journalism School.
