Updated: Consumers Union Avoids Layoffs

Employees of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, voted July 17 to give up a 3 percent pay raise and certain perks to avoid layoffs.

Members of the Newspaper Guild of New York ratified an agreement that would forgo the pay increase scheduled to kick in in January 2010; the company 401(k) match in 2010; and other benefits. The Guild represents about 350 scientists, writers, researchers and administrative staffers.
