U.K.'s Mail Online Becomes the World's Second Most Popular News Site

Overtakes the Huffington Post for the most viewers, according to March data

The Daily Mail's website Mail Online has surpassed the Huffington Post as the world's second most popular news website, according to March data from comScore, and now ranks behind only The New York Times' site in comScore’s newspaper category.

Mail Online reported a 27 percent rise in unique visitors between February and March, to 39,635,000, while the Huffington Post recorded a 20 percent lift, to 38,429,000 unique visitors.

Mail Online has grown in popularity over the past few years because of its "showbiz-laden front page," says the Guardian, and because of its increased coverage of U.S. news, with expanded editorial staffs in New York and Los Angeles. It is also the U.K.’s most popular newspaper site, despite a slight drop in U.K. online traffic in February.

The New York Times, which still leads as the world’s most popular English-language news site, remains far ahead of its competition. It reported a 41 percent rise in traffic in February to a record-breaking 61,964,000 unique visitors (although that number is expected to drop now that the site's paywall has been erected).

The Tribune newspapers were fourth in comScore’s ranking, with 34,624,000 unique visitors. And the Guardian’s site, Guardian.co.uk, came in fifth with 30,891,000 users, including a U.S. online audience of about 8 million users.
