Justine Rosenthal, the editor of Newsweek’s digital-only incarnation, Newsweek Global, is leaving the company, editor in chief Tina Brown announced in a staffwide memo that was published earlier today by Capital New York. Former New Republic editor Richard Just, who left TNR following its purchase by Chris Hughes and joined Newsweek as a consulting editor shortly thereafter, will replace her, while foreign editor Louise Roug will serve as his deputy.
Rosenthal first joined Newsweek in 2011 as a senior editor and was tapped to oversee the soon-to-be-sold magazine less than three months ago when then-editor Tunku Varadarajan stepped down. Rosenthal had worked closely with Varadarajan on the launch of Newsweek Global at the start of this year.
"Justine felt given the sale on the near horizon it made sense for her to move on now and take the summer to pursue her multiple creative options," a NewsBeast spokesman told Adweek.
In her memo, Brown praised Rosenthal’s work at Newsweek over the past two years while acknowledging the magazine’s recent hardships. “In these last difficult months with reduced resources, she has shown tireless professionalism,” Brown wrote. “Under Justine’s editorship we were able to reverse Newsweek's many years of decline and breathe life back into the magazine both as a print edition and in the stellar digital format that she and the team have continued to produce each week.”
At the end of May, Newsweek owner IAC confirmed it was seeking a buyer for the magazine after having acquired it in 2010. In a memo, Brown and then-CEO Baba Shetty (he resigned shortly after the sale was announced) explained that the demands of running Newsweek had “taken attention and focus away from The Daily Beast.” A source inside the company said that there had been interest from outside parties, but no takers so far.
