'Time' Is Magazine of the Year

'New York,' 'The New Yorker' win multiple awards

The National Magazine Awards were handed out May 3, and Time, New York and The New Yorker led the pack. Time was the surprise winner of Magazine of the Year, beating out favorites like New York, The New Yorker and Esquire

Despite the recognition of first-time nominees Vice and The Fader, the list of winners was heavy on magazine establishment (and male-skewing) names. New York won three, including Single-Topic Issue for "The Encyclopedia of 9/11." The New Yorker won for Reporting for "The Apostate," its widely acclaimed epic on the Church of Scientology; and Public Interest. For those keeping score by magazine company, Condé Nast collected the most—six—of the elephant-shaped awards, or Ellies. Hearst got three and Time Inc. got one (albeit the biggest).

After Magazine of the Year, people tend to pay close attention to the General Excellence awards. Among general interest titles, Bloomberg Businessweek beat out perennial winners New York, GQ and The New Yorker. O, the Oprah Magazine, which has struggled since Oprah’s talk show went off the air, beat out stalwarts Glamour, More, W and Real Simple in women’s magazines to win its first Gen Ex award. In lifestyle magazines, House Beautiful triumphed over Texas Monthly, and Garden & Gun. Inc. won for active and special interest and IEEE Spectrum for thought-leader magazines.

A posthumous honor went to Christopher Hitchens, the Vanity Fair critic who died in December after a battle with cancer. Vanity Fair won for three of his columns in the Columns and Commentary category.

NBC newsman Brian Williams hosted the dinner event at the New York Marriott Marquis and mercifully kept the evening moving fast. (The American Society of Magazine Editors was determined to avoid a repeat of last year’s overly long ceremony.) Still, Williams didn't disappoint with the wisecracks. "Always thought there should be a niche market-publication, New Yorkers and Gun," he quipped, referring to General Excellence contender Garden & Gun.
