Smithsonian.com Launches Video Contest

Winners' videos to appear online, VOD channel

Following Smithsonian magazine’s digitally-focused redesign last year, Smithsonian.com getting ready to launch a short film contest titled Smithsonian in Motion.

Would-be filmmakers will be invited to submit videos in one of six categories (nature, people, science, mobile, travel or arts). Winners in each category, as voted upon by a panel of judges, will have their videos highlighted on the Smithsonian Channel’s Video on Demand and be interviewed for an online feature, while the Grand Prize winner will receive a $2,000 cash prize. Smithsonian.com visitors will get to vote on a Viewer’s Choice winner, which comes with a $1,000 prize.

Smithsonian.com is also working on drumming up sponsor interest for the contest. Each sponsorship—which starts at $200,000—comes with incentives like 5 million ad impressions on Smithsonian.com, five-second on air bumpers on the VOD channel, promotional in the print and digital editions of the magazine, and the “opportunity to provide gifts” to contest winners.

After its official kickoff next month, the contest will be open for entries between April and June. The winners will be announced in September.
