Huffington Post Hires NYTimes' Timothy L. O'Brien

In the second high-level defection from The New York Times this week, Timothy L. O’Brien is leaving to become national editor at the Huffington Post. O’Brien, who had been editor of the Sunday Business section at the Times, will oversee HuffPo’s politics and culture coverage and contribute to business reports. HuffPo editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington called O’Brien “a world-class editor with a proven ability to bring out the best in the writers he works with, producing engaging, high-impact stories. His demonstrated ability to lead a team of journalists and his dedication to holding powerful institutions to account make him an ideal fit for The Huffington Post.”For his part, O’Brien said he would “miss The New York Times, which has been like a second home to me. I’ll always have great respect for its traditions.” O’Brien’s exit comes on the heels of news that David Shipley, who is quitting as op-ed page editor, is headed for Bloomberg LP. There he’ll join ex–U.S. State Department assistant secretary James Rubin to run a new editorial page called Bloomberg View.And earlier this fall, two big names—Robin Givhan and Howard Kurtz—quit another storied journalistic enterprise, The Washington Post, for Tina Brown’s two-year-old online news upstart The Daily Beast. The creation of Bloomberg View follows the company’s efforts to expand its audience and influence, with the establishment of a governmental reporting unit and the purchase of Bloomberg Businessweek a year ago. The company currently runs columns on its terminals by journalists including Michael Lewis, Al Hunt and Margaret Carlson, as well as guest op-eds, which will continue. Shipley and Rubin will oversee the publication of signed and unsigned editorials that will run across Bloomberg’s media platforms, possibly including the weekly magazine.
