Hollywood.com Plans Overhaul

Despite competition, new content exec sees hole in market

There's no shortage of celebrity news on the Web, but Michelle Lee, Hollywood.com's new senior vice president of content and editorial director, said she plans to go after a hole in the market by expanding the site's coverage to entertainment industry news. 

Lee, who was most recently the top editor at In Touch Weekly, is planning to build on Hollywood.com's stock celebrity and movie news by adding industry coverage, original video content and photo galleries. The overhaul is expected to take place in the coming year.

“I think that there’s a big hole in the market right now,” she told Adweek. “There are a lot of celebrity news aggregators, but not a lot of fresh perspectives on the stories.”

Lee said she made the leap to digital because she was drawn by the chance to build something from the ground up. “[In Touch owner] Bauer Publishing doesn’t really have a huge emphasis on digital, which is something that, for years, I’ve found really intriguing,” Lee said. 

In her years at In Touch, Lee has watched the field become less female-dominated. “It used to be Bonnie Fuller, Janice Min, Sarah Ivens, Candace Trunzo and me. But now it's all men,” said Lee, who has also held editorial positions at Us Weekly and Glamour. “A lot of the power women in publishing have gone to digital—so I'm in good company.”
