TV Guide Magazine executive editor Doug Brod has been promoted to editor in chief of the weekly title, CEO David Fishman announced today. Brod, who joined TV Guide in 2012, had previously been the editor in chief of Spin magazine and prior to that a senior editor at Entertainment Weekly.
“Doug has done a superb job in the past two years managing the New York staff and workflow, and evolving the voice of the magazine,” Fishman said in a statement. “His extensive entertainment-journalism experience will help sharpen our coverage of the ever-changing world of television and direct the staff to produce content on a variety of platforms.”
Brod has effectively been leading the magazine’s editorial team since former editor in chief Debra Birnbaum was ousted in February.
Michael Schneider, the magazine’s Los Angeles bureau chief since 2011, will replace Brod as executive editor. He will continue to work out of the West Coast office.
TV Guide’s circulation of about 2 million remained relatively flat in the second half of 2013, per the Alliance for Audited Media, while subscriptions saw an uptick of 4.4 percent. The magazine’s business side has struggled in the first quarter of 2014, however, with ad pages dropping about 20 percent, according to the Publishers’ Information Bureau.
