LOS ANGELES Young & Rubicam today laid off staffers "across all different departments and levels" in its New York headquarters, a representative of the WPP Group agency confirmed.
Sources said the terminations involved 45-50 people, or approximately 10 percent of the shop's New York staff. The Y&R rep declined to provide a total number of jobs cut.
The reduction was motivated by revenue losses stemming from the departure late last year of the Computer Associates account, as well as AT&T's withdrawal from consumer advertising to concentrate on business-to-business markets.
AT&T's decision to concentrate on b-to-b customers reduced billings in the agency's New York office by more than $100 million, one source said. The loss of CA trimmed an additional $100 million in billings from the roster.
The rep declined to disclose specific revenue or billings losses.
