NEW YORK–Yahoo! has incorporated video capabilities to its instant messaging service. By building more functionality into its chat service, which the company boasts has nearly 12 million users, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based superportal looks to innovate in a highly competitive space against America Online and Microsoft, which each have their own real-time chat services.

According to reps at Yahoo!, this is the first time that video has been added to instant messaging services. Although not delivered as streaming video, images appear at a rate of one frame per second to simulate video movement.
