NEW YORK — Worldwide revenue at WPP Group fell 2 percent, to $2.83 billion, in the first half of 2002, compared to the same period last year. WPP attributed the decline to “difficult economic conditions, particularly in the U.S.”

Indeed, in the first six months of 2002, revenue fell 6 percent in North America, which supplies about 45 percent of the company’s total revenue. In contrast, gains were recorded in continental Europe (up nearly 8 percent), the U.K.
