LOS ANGELES Independent Wieden + Kennedy has named Tom Blessington managing director of its Portland, Ore., headquarters.

The position is new, and he will report to Dave Luhr, chief operating officer, starting on Sept. 5.

Blessington previously held the same title at Omnicom Group's TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif., where he worked on the shop's flagship Nissan and Infiniti accounts. (Some of the personnel working on that business are moving to Nashville, Tenn., following the automaker's move from Gardena, Calif.) His successor at TBWA\C\D has not been named.

"What has become abundantly clear is that we need a dedicated Portland leader who can focus on the Portland office, allowing me more time for global issues," said Luhr. "Tom was an enormous asset to this agency and it will be great to have him back."

Blessington worked at W+K for 12 years prior to joining TBWA\C\D in 2002.

"I am extremely energized to return to W+K," said Blessington. "The last several years have been an exciting growth period for W+K and in particular for the Portland office. My goal is to manage the agency for growth and to foster a creative environment that will continue to develop innovative ways for our current and future clients to build their business."

Luhr added that he was impressed with what Blessington had done on the Nissan and Infiniti business. W+K, best known for its Nike campaigns, also represents Honda in Europe. Other key clients include Coca-Cola, Electronic Arts, Procter & Gamble and Starbucks. The shop posted revenue of approximately $65 million on billings of $650 million last year.
