William Gibson began predicting the future almost 20 years ago. His 1984 “cyberpunk” novel, Neuromancer, coined the term cyberspace long before the Internet was commonplace. His most recent work, Pattern Recognition, is his first set in the present. It follows a coolhunter, Cayce, who is allergic to branding—the sight of Tommy Hilfiger makes her nearly pass out. Born in the U.S. but long a Vancouver resident, Gibson, 54, discusses viral-marketing schemes, ironic advertising and “terrifyingly hip” 12-year-olds.
