Wal-Mart has promoted John Fleming, who headed the retailer’s Web efforts, to chief marketing officer, effective today. Fleming, 46, succeeds Robert Connolly, 61, who is retiring at year’s end. The Bentonville, Ark.-based company spends about $500 million per year on ads, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Its lead agencies are Omnicom’s GSD&M in Austin, Texas, and independent Bernstein-Rein in Kansas City, Mo.
