The head of the American Association of Advertising Agencies hopes to convince Gen. Barry McCaffrey, the White House “drug czar,” that the creative portion of a federal anti-drug campaign should be handled by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America.
Pending Congressional approval, the government will launch an agency review this fall for a five-year ad effort with a $150 million annual budget. This marks the first federal initiative to purchase airtime to run anti-drug ads.
The 4A’s Burtch Drake, president and chief executive officer, and Hal Shoup, executive vice president, met with McCaffrey, head of the White House Office of Drug Control Policy, last month.
“The general assumption is that this campaign is going to happen,” Drake said.
