Ad expenditures rose to $31.5 billion in the first quarter, up nearly 10 percent over 2003, according to research released last week by TNS Media Intelligence/CMR. The industry benefited from a recovering economy; in contrast, in first-quarter 2003, concerns about the Iraq war dampened March spending levels. Internet adspend rose 28 percent to $1.8 billion; syndication climbed nearly 17 percent to $947 million; cable TV was up 16 percent to $2.9 billion; national newspapers rose 15 percent to $774 million; and network TV was up 12 percent to $5.6 billion.
