Umansky Succeeds Britton at Arnold Outpost

Ken Umansky has been named president of Arnold Worldwide's operations in McLean, Va.

Along with guiding the 150-person office, and overseeing a 10-person satellite in nearby Richmond, Va., Umansky will continue to lead Arnold's 40-person technology group, which is based in the agency's Boston headquarters. The group's clients include telecommunications conglomerate Alcatel, EMC Corp. and Mirror Image Internet. Umansky played a key role in attracting those accounts.

"My wife is from here [the Virginia area]," Umansky said. "We had bought a house down here to commute back and forth [to Boston]. So, when Rick [Britton] decided to retire, I was the logical choice." Umansky will continue his efforts to grow the technology group from McLean, targeting Eastern U.S. high-tech accounts, he said.

"Ken's extensive background will help Arnold ... reach additional untapped opportunities not only in Northern Virginia but throughout the mid-Atlantic, Southeast and Midwest," said Ed Eskandarian, Arnold chairman and chief executive.

Britton, who could not be reached by press time, in 1997 transferred from Arnold's Boston office to its Richmond satellite. He moved to McLean two years later, overseeing the consolidation of much of Arnold's Virginia operations. Clients in McLean and Richmond include Sallie Mae, PNC Bank, Exxon Mobile and regional McDonald's franchises.

Umansky joined Arnold as a managing partner in February 1999 after seven years at The Richards Group in Dallas, where he was one of seven account service principals reporting to president Stan Richards.

Umansky was tapped to lead the technology group three months later. His tenure there has generally been viewed as successful, though the unit has of late been hit by the dot-com slowdown, losing Toysmart.com when that client folded, and several other assignments.
