Tribe Looks to Newbury for Creative Infusion

ATLANTA The creative torch has been passed at Tribe, with Jim Newbury arriving as senior vice president and creative director. He succeeds agency founder and CEO, Elizabeth Cogswell Baskin, in the role.

Newbury, 51, previously was creative director at ComGroup/MRA in Atlanta for seven years. He also has been an art director and assistant creative director at shops such as McCann Erickson, Fitzgerald + Co., WestWayne and GSD&M.

Baskin, who opened the independent Atlanta shop in 2002, remains Tribe's CEO. She hired Newbury because growth at the agency demanded more creative manpower.

"We've grown to the point where we need someone of Jim's stature here to focus on the creative work every day," Baskin said. "We work with national consumer brands and Jim is accustomed to playing on that level."

Newbury said he plans to add at least three new staffers to the four currently in the creative department. In the past, the 10-person agency has relied heavily on freelance creatives to work on many of its accounts.

Newbury said he specializes in helping new agencies grow. When he joined ComGroup, the shop had only two employees. When he left, it employed 18 and billings reached $10 million, he said. While at ComGroup, he worked with clients such as ADT, the Oxford American magazine and CARE.

"I'm looking forward to helping build a strong agency that appreciates the value of great creative," he said.

Tribe's client roster includes Porsche Cars North America, UPS, The Home Depot and Mannington Floors.
