NEW YORK-Albertson's and Safeway this week settled lawsuits in California that claimed the supermarket retailers had misrepresented the quality and ratings of wine in marketing promotions. The suit, filed in Alameda County Superior Court, purported that the stores often featured tags, labels, shelf talkers, product collars and bottle neckers with scores or awards that did not match the wines they advertised.
Albertson's and Safeway each will pay $30,000 to county prosecutors and must ensure that wine bottles are properly labeled and marketed, though they did not have to admit to any wrongdoing.
"I think there's a public interest in accurate representations being made in the sale of any product, including wine, television, you name it," said Anthony Douglas, a deputy district attorney with the Alameda County consumer and environmental protection division.
Representatives from both retailers said they took the necessary steps to rectify the situation soon after the suit was filed.
