TBWA\C\D, JWT Among the Winners of Inaugural Awards Show
LOS ANGELES--Unlike Rodney Dangerfield, Tinseltown's most famous outdoor ad location has finally gotten some respect.
The first West Hollywood Sunset Strip Billboard Awards gala was held at the Hyatt on Sunset last Thursday night, and ad agencies in Southern California and around the country shared the spotlight. In all, awards for billboard and tall-wall advertisements were handed out in eight categories, including automotive, beverages and fashion.
Arnold Communications, Boston, won in the automotive category for its Volkswagen billboard titled "Skybar." In the beverage category, "Tri-Vision/Speaking," a board for Sauza Tequila from New York-based Cliff Freeman and Partners, was the big winner. TBWA\
Chiat\Day, Marina del Rey, Calif., won in the consumer goods category for its "Desi & Lucy" tall wall for Apple.

Walter Thompson claimed the fashion prize for its "Millennium" tall wall for DeBeers. Walt Disney Productions' in-house team won in the motion picture category for its Mighty Joe Young tall wall. And TNT's in-house talent claimed the TV category for its "Heartbeat" campaign.
Irving, Texas-based Temerlin McClain won in the travel category for its "Coming" outdoor ad for the Paris Hotel & Casino. For most effective celebrity tall wall, HBO's in-house team's "Oscar De La Hoya May 22nd Fight on HBO" entry topped the category.
The event was supported by the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and other West Hollywood city officials, who say the wide array of billboards contributes to the Strip's artistic and economic development.
"What the billboard awards are doing is fostering greater originality on the Strip," said West Hollywood councilman Steve Martin. "We believe these awards will not only increase the value of the billboards and tall walls, but [also their] visibility within the [ad] industry." K
