Rory Strunk calls the newly recruited chief of Resorts Sports Network the "convergence CEO".
Bill Burke this month joins the Portland, Maine, lifestyle sports cable and Web company as chief executive officer. "We want to be the Martha Stewart of lifestyle sports," said Strunk, who founded the company 15 years ago and now boasts the title chief vision officer. "We have a large community of dedicated outdoor enthusiasts through our various platforms, and the convergence of content and commerce puts us right on the mark."
Burke was most recently president and CEO of news and information at Time Warner Digital Media, a post to which he was recruited after serving as president of TBS Superstation and Turner South in Atlanta. He joined Turner in 1992 as director of business development, and later served as general manager at Turner Classic Movies, where he helped launch the cable channel.
Burke attended school in New England, and relocating to Maine fulfills a dream, he said. "We always wanted to live in Maine, but with my television, business development and programming background, the issue was where to work," he said. An executive recruiter introduced Burke and Strunk.
The RSN cable network currently serves 56 resort areas. It's Web site, which features "resort cams," travel packages and sports gear, was rated the No. 1 winter sports site in January, according to Media Metrix. And it recently launched RSN.com TV, a so-called convergence product that broadcasts its programming in some markets via broadband partnerships with MediaOne, AT&T Media Services and Time Warner Cable.
The privately held company has received funding from Pilot House Associates, cable pioneer Amos Hostetter's family investment business, another selling point for Burke. K
