How much would you pay for a piece of gum that's been chewed by both Patti LaBelle and Alex Bogusky? There is, indeed, such an item, and last Tuesday, at the Advertising Club of New York's International Andy Awards ceremony, Crispin Porter + Bogusky's ecd pondered putting it on eBay.
LaBelle opened the 40th anniversary show—co-sponsored by her new label, Def Soul Classics, along with Yahoo!, Kodak and The Albert Co. —and after apologizing for a voice that had been overtaxed a few days before, belted out a version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that got a standing ovation. Bogusky, the jury chairman, took the stage at downtown restaurant Capitale to thank her, nabbing the gum she'd left at the podium on his way over. "I don't have any diseases!" LaBelle assured Bogusky, but then admitted to the crowd, "He has a wonderful face, a wonderful heart, but I can't think of his last name right now!"
He need not take it personally—LaBelle also forgot the words to her second number—and anyway, she seemed to be a fan. "Ooh, he's too cute!" she exclaimed as she turned the stage over to an evening of ad-watching.
