Arnie Spanier of Los Angeles sports radio station KXTA-AM 1150 put his chamois where his mouth was after making an on-air promise to wash cars if the L.A. Lakers won the NBA championship.
A rival sports station, KMPC-AM 1540, added insult to injury by showing up at the Big Hand Car Wash in Studio City, Calif., with a promotions van in need of a wash. Not only is KMPC a major competitor of KXTA's, it is also the former home of afternoon drive personality Spanier.
"He was very much a gentleman," said Nancy Cole, vice president and general manager of KMPC, Santa Monica, Calif. "We wanted to bring the rivalry back to radio and make it fun."
KMPC took a final friendly jab at Spanier by posting a play-by-play account of the car wash payoff on the photo gallery of its Web site (www.1on1Sports.com)
