The logo for this year’s Super Bowl is stark, simple and a bit puzzling. Isn’t a lighthouse more of a New England thing? Does San Diego—the host city—even have a lighthouse?

“Actually, it has two,” says Daniel Simon of Studio Simon in Louisville, Ky., whose design was chosen over 29 others. “The one I used is Old Point Loma Lighthouse, which was first lit in 1855,” he says. The lamp was extinguished for good in 1891.
