A Schlotzsky’s Introduces Hypnotic TV
DALLAS–McGarrah/Jessee breaks new television ads this week for Schlotzsky’s Deli. Each of the seven spots features a sandwich hovering mid-screen, surrounded by subtly swirling graphics and a hypnotic-sounding voiceover. In one ad, the soothing voiceover says: “Look deeply into the delicious low-fat smoked turkey breast sandwich. Now . . . look away. Ha! You can not! The power of Schlotzsky’s is too great.” Each commercial ends with the chain’s slogan, “Funny name. Serious sandwich.” The work from McGarrah in Austin, Texas, bows this week in the 37 states in which Schlotzsky’s, also of Austin, has franchise restaurants.
A Bates Southwest Forms New Division
DALLAS–Bates Southwest has combined resources with design specialists Baxter + Korge to establish Bates Corporate Design Group. Fred Korge, former principal at Baxter + Korge, will be vice president of Bates Southwest and president of Bates Corporate Design Group. Baxter vice president Jackie Dryden will become vice president of Bates SW and general manager of the new entity. Operating independently from Bates SW, the Houston-based unit will serve clients of both firms.
A Rives Recruits Top Creatives From Ogilvy
DALLAS–Karen Holland and David Tobin, the award-winning art director and copywriter team from Ogilvy & Mather, have joined local shop Rives Carlberg following Ogilvy’s decision to dismantle its Houston office. Holland recently received the Houston Addy’s best of show in print award for her work on the Shell industrial lubricants campaign. Tobin’s computer-animated series for Shell gasoline won gold awards at the Chicago International Festival and New York Festivals.

DALLAS–Mangan Holcomb Rainwater Culpepper has gained the business-to-business advertising account of Delta & Pine Land Co., a major developer and marketer of cotton and soybean seeds. The $1 million-plus account joins the ranks of agricultural clients Monsanto, Delta King Seed Co. and Hartz Seed Co. already handled by the Little Rock, Ark., agency.
A ‘Truth’ Puts Dent in Florida Teen Smoking
ATLANTA–Teen smoking continues to decline in Florida, according to a survey of 20,000 students by the state’s Department of Health. For middle school students, cigarette use has dropped from 15 percent in 1999 to 8.6 percent this year. For the same period, high school figures fell from 25.2 percent to 20.9 percent. Since Miami’s Crispin Porter & Bogusky began its “Truth” campaign in 1998, cigarette usage has declined 54 percent among middle schoolers and 24 percent among high schoolers.
