As the director of consumer promotions at WonderGroup, Penny Schenk will be immersed in a world she already has a great love for: kids and children's programming.
In the post, Schenk, a former director of marketing services at Evenflo in Bendalla, Ohio, leads the Cincinnati youth-marketing shop's four-person promotions department. Long a fan of children's cartoons and other programming (as well as watching her 5-year-old grandson play with toys), Schenk, 44, is now required to keep up with what is going on in the world of kids. "I tell my husband I have to know what happened on the last episode of [Nickelodeon's] The Fairly Odd Parents," she joked.
Schenk's duties also entail talking to children for feedback on promotions. The segment is cluttered with games and contests, and she is looking for the next "big buzz" among kids. Schenk reports to WonderGroup president Dave Siegel.
Schenk most recently worked as a marketing consultant in the Cincinnati area. She served as director of marketing services at Evenflo until she was laid off last August in a corporate restructuring. In February, Schenk approached Siegel, whom she knew from her tenure at Evenflo and Futuro Curad bandages, about a position with the shop. During her career, she also has had stints with Jergens and The Waylon Co. in St. Louis.
Schenk, who has a vocal performance degree from the University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music, originally pursued a career as an opera singer but soon "tired of the life." She sings in her spare time at local nightclubs and in her church choir.
WonderGroup has 40 staffers. The agency recently completed a tie-in for ConAgra's Kid Cuisine with Nickelodeon and is working on a promotion for Chupa Chups Lollipops.
