BOSTON ScanSoft has chosen Gearon Hoffman for its estimated $2-3 million ad account.

The independent shop here will handle both creative and media chores for the Peabody, Mass., company, a provider of business software.

Gearon Hoffman has ties to ScanSoft through previous agency client Lernout & Hauspie, a software concern ScanSoft recently acquired. ScanSoft in recent years had worked with Boston independent Velocity Advertising on print-based campaigns.

The addition is important for Gearon because it gets the agency back in the high-tech sector, an important local category in which the shop thrived during the dot-com boom, said Bob Hoffman, agency president.
