CHICAGO Sara Lee Corp. on Tuesday said Brenda Barnes has been named president and chief operating officer, effective July 1.

Barnes is the former president, CEO of Pepsi-Cola North America. She currently serves as a director on a number of corporate boards, including Avon, The New York Times Co., Sears and Staples. She will report to C. Steven McMillan, chairman and CEO of Chicago-based Sara Lee.

"We are delighted to have a leader of Brenda's talent and experience joining Sara Lee's senior executive team. Brenda brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge, integrity and operational expertise to the company, and her reputation for delivering results while building strong branded businesses makes her an excellent match for Sara Lee," McMillan said in a statement.

During her 22-year career at PepsiCo, Barnes held a number of senior executive positions in operations, general management, manufacturing, sales and marketing. In 1996, Barnes was named president and chief executive officer of Pepsi-Cola North America, a position she held until 1998.
