Starcom MediaVest Group’s sports marketing unit has opened a New York office as it attempts to become the go-to player in its field for future parent Publicis.

“[Publicis] does not have a sports and entertainment marketing agency,” said Wally Hayward, CEO of Relay Sports and Event Marketing. “It puts us in a great position to become the [sports and event marketing] network” for all the holding company’s properties.

Michael Kelley, formerly director of marketing for Yahoo!, will head up Relay’s New York office as general manager starting July 15.
