LOS ANGELES In the midst of reviewing its $25 million account, the Quiznos sandwich chain has hired McDonald's chief concept officer Tom Ryan to lead product and concept development.
Ryan will start at the Denver-based client in mid-September and his title has not been determined, said Quiznos representative Stacie Lange. This is a new position at Quiznos, she said.
Ryan will start just as the review is wrapping up, but he may be involved in the selection process, said Lange. Ryan will likely have an impact on the company's overall marketing direction, Lange said, though she declined to elaborate. Ryan did not return calls.
The review is being led by Brooksy Smith, a Quiznos executive vice president who has responsibility for both marketing and operations.
Agencies vying for the creative portion of the $25 million account are independents Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., WongDoody in Los Angeles and The Romann Group and incumbent Cliff Freeman + Partners, both in New York, and the Interpublic Group's The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va.
Media contenders are the incumbent, IPG's Initiative Media in New York and independents Camelot Communications in Dallas and Media Head in New York.
WPP Group's OgilvyPR in Denver currently handles public relations and Zipatoni in St. Louis has point-of-purchase duties. Quiznos has not determined if it will go with one integrated agency or continue to work with its specialty shops, the client has said [Adweek Online, August 12].
