NEW YORK Publicis Groupe in a statement today confirmed “very preliminary conversations … with Aegis Group in respect of a possible offer” to acquire the London-based holding company.

Publicis added, “It is extremely premature to conclude that these conversations will lead to an offer for Aegis.”

Shares in Aegis soared 24 percent yesterday as the company confirmed talks with a potential buyer about a deal valued at $2.8 billion.

“Aegis confirms that it has received an approach at an indicative level of 140 pence per Aegis share,” Aegis said in its statement of its own.
