NEW YORK Marking the switch from traditional bulbs to advanced, environmentally responsible solid-state lighting, Philips Electronics said it would usher in 2006 by sponsoring a charity auction of the light bulbs used to illuminate the New Year’s Eve Ball above Times Square.

One hundred percent of the winning bid will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, the company said. The charity auction, part of the company’s “Next year is brought to you by Philips” marketing campaign, will take place from Dec.
