NEW YORK — Online grocery service Peapod announced it is expanding its services in Maryland and Washington, D.C. beginning Tuesday, based largely on the 30% increase in orders it has received since the closure of rival e-grocery service Homeruns.com last month, according to the company.

Peapod plans to increase in-store advertising, but has not revealed local print or TV strategies. Peapod has been hiring additional in-store stockers and drivers over the past two weeks to handle the boost in demand, bringing its total number of employees in the D.C.
