LOS ANGELES Harry Cocciolo, a top creative director at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, is leaving the agency to help recast Odiorne Wilde Narraway + Partners, executives at both agencies confirmed.
Cocciolo starts on Dec. 1 as partner and creative director at the 60-person San Francisco shop, which is expected to unveil a new name later this week. His hire follows the recent departure of two key OWN+P executives, including chairman and executive creative director Jeff Odiorne, who departed last month to launch an entertainment-based venture in New York, and creative director Michael Wilde, who left two months prior to complete a film.
In his new role, Cocciolo is joining forces with CEO Eileen Arbues, formerly of Silver/Melville/Arbues, who joined OWN+P over the summer to transition the agency, as well as OWN+P general manager Andy Narraway, director of account planning Keith McVaney and director of account services John Aldrich. Cocciolo did not return calls seeking comment.
At Goodby, Cocciolo's recent duties included leading creative on the Discover Card and AT&T Wireless accounts. He first joined the shop in 1992, working on accounts like Budweiser, Polaroid, Sega, Major League Baseball and the California Milk Processor Board's "Got milk?" campaign. In 1997, he left for crosstown shop Leagas Delaney, but returned to Goodby in June 2002 to work on SBC and Discover.
"He's a wonderful person and a great creative director and it's a shame," said Goodby president Colin Probert. "I'm extremely fond of him and I've enjoyed working with him immensely."
Goodby has no plans to replace Cocciolo, Probert said. Other team members, including associate creative director Mimi Cook on Discover, and co-chairmen Rich Silverstein and Jeff Goodby and associate creative directors Colin Nissan and Sean Farrell on AT&T Wireless, will assume Cocciolo's duties said Probert.
Arbues said she had been a client of Cocciolo's at Goodby, when she was vice president of consumer marketing for Pacific Bell, and at Leagas, when she was COO of software company 2Bridge Communications. "He's one of the best thinkers and most creative guys in the industry," Arbues said.
Since OWN+P will have new leadership and a new name and recently moved into a new location across from Pacific Bell Park in the Embarcadero, Arbues said she considers it to be a new agency. The shop will continue to work with primary client Electronic Arts, as well as Campari, 1800 Tequila and the Embarcadero Center. The shop is also looking to hire a few associate creative directors and account directors, she said.
