NEW YORK — New York Times Co. named Gerald M. Boyd managing editor of its flagship newspaper, the New York Times, effective in September.

Mr. Boyd, who has been deputy managing editor for news at the New York Times since 1997, succeeds Bill Keller, who last month was named an op-ed columnist and senior writer for the New York Times Magazine and other areas of the newspaper. A replacement for Mr. Boyd, 51 years old, wasn’t named.
