SAN FRANCISCO - Hoffman/Lewis last week named former Goldberg Moser O'Neill senior vp Josh Nichol to a new post, executive vp/general manager. The move is the latest in a string of hires that have brought talent from high-visibility San Francisco agencies into the small agency.
Nichol, 39, will assume responsibility for creating a new-business program for the agency along with day-to-day management duties. The agency, which co-principal Bob Hoffman said grew to $40 million from $25 million in 1991, has successfully added clients such as Men's Wearhouse, Lyons Restaurants, Alliance Broadcasting and Mechanics Bank in the past year. But H/L, whose other accounts include Northern California Toyota Dealers and ComputerLand Corp., has not had a formal strategy for pursuing the larger accounts it seeks, and it has been left out of a number of the high-profile reviews in the region.
'We felt there was a dimension missing to our management team,' said Hoffman, who has shared general management duties with co-principal Roger Lewis. 'We were really not terribly good at that. It's real easy to kid yourself about your management skills.'
Since Hoffman joined the agency in 1991, H/L has added Rick Strand as group creative director and Sam Pond as associate creative director. Both had previously worked for Hal Riney & Partners.
Nichol, who was most recently director of account management at GMO, had earlier worked for the agency's predecessors, Chiat/Day/Mojo and Allen & Dorward. Unlike those previous job changes, Nichol said, 'I finally had to interview for something.'
