Congressional Gambling Commission to Recommend FTC Powers
WASHINGTON, D.C.-A national gambling panel is expected to recommend that Congress extend the authority of the Federal Trade
Commission to enforce lottery and tribal casino advertising rules.
The proposal is part of several preliminary recommendations the National Gambling Impact Study Commission will likely make in its final report to Congress June 18 on the social and economic effects of gaming. Others include recommending that an outside board be appointed in each state to oversee lottery marketing, and prohibiting lotteries from targeting children and low-income groups.
Each state and tribal government should adopt voluntary advertising guidelines, but the FTC should act as the enforcer, commission members said at a hearing here last week.
Lobby groups question whether the FTC’s jurisdiction can be extended to the states.
