NEW YORK Microsoft’s MSN has posted its first profitable year, moving from a $567 million loss in fiscal 2003 to a $121 million operating profit in fiscal 2004.

The Redmond, Wash.-based company attributed the nearly $690 million turnaround to an increase in display and paid-search advertising on the Web property, a decline in customer acquisition costs and other expenses related to the Internet-access business, and improved efficiency in ad and subscription operations.

The financial results were released yesterday as a part of Microsoft’s earnings report.
